A Foster Carer’s Journey with Vale of Glamorgan Council

Nicola had thought about fostering for a long time. “I used to work alongside another foster carer from the Vale of Glamorgan,” she explains. “I always said to myself: when the time is right, I’ll do that too.”

After getting married and having three children of their own, Nicola and her husband felt ready. “Our youngest was eight, and all three of our children were really encouraging. They loved the idea of being part of a fostering family.” The couple began their journey with Foster Wales Vale of Glamorgan and, 11 years later, have never looked back.

Supporting Babies and Building Lifelong Bonds

Nicola specialises in fostering babies, caring for them through key transitions—whether they return to birth families or move on to adoption. She also supports children through emergency and short break placements.

“The longest we cared for a child was four years. You build strong bonds and, even after they move on, many still come back for birthdays and Christmas. We’re still part of their lives. It’s lovely to see them grow.”

From Children’s Work to Full-Time Fostering

Her background always involved children—from running a play centre to working as a bank nurse and in creches. “Fostering just felt like the right step. I’ll never look back.”

From day one, Nicola makes sure every child feels included and safe. “The moment they walk through the door, they’re part of the family. We surround them with love, nurture and a safe space. That’s how trust grows—just being there for them.”

The impact extends to her own children too. “They’ve been very nurturing and supportive. Two of them even went on to work with children themselves.”

The Challenges and the Joys

Fostering isn’t without its challenges. “Sometimes it’s difficult building relationships with birth parents, but we do our best. Ultimately, if it’s safe, the best outcome is for children to return to their families.”

But the rewards are deeply fulfilling. “Watching a child thrive in a calm, loving home is everything. I remember sitting in the audience at a Christmas concert, seeing a child I’d cared for on stage, and thinking I helped make that possible.”

A Lasting Impact

Even after children leave Nicola’s care, the connection continues. “They still come over for Sunday lunch. We make memory books for each child. It’s such a lovely way to stay connected.”

Fostering has also brought her own family closer. “It’s taught us empathy, patience and how powerful love and care can be.”

Thinking About Fostering? Nicola’s Advice

“For anyone considering fostering, I’d say—look into it. Speak to your local authority and find out what’s involved. Yes, there are challenges, but if you’re truly committed, it’s one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do.”
