the story of

sian

Sian and her partner are proud parents to a 5-year-old boy and twin girls who are 22 months old. Together, they have created a busy, loving home full of life, laughter, and animals.

They have also been foster carers for five years – a journey that has brought both challenges and incredible rewards. Alongside being a foster carer, Sian also cares for her mum and has a big passion for animals, especially horses.

“We are a very fun and busy family, who love spending time outdoors on the farm, riding the horses and making memories with each other.”

Finding the Rewards in Fostering

When Sian talks about fostering, it is clear how much it means to her and her family.

“I would say that the most rewarding moments as a foster carer have been having the opportunity to provide stability and love. As well as being able to provide a meaningful relationship with not only the child I care for but the people who are involved. Finally, growth for myself as it has taught me new skills and brought out skills I didn’t realise I had. Also, growth for the child – seeing them change and grow during the time that they have been with me.”

For Sian, fostering has not only given her the chance to make a difference in a child’s life, but it has also helped her learn more about herself and her strengths.

Support Along the Way

Like many foster carers, Sian has found that having the right support makes all the difference.

“The most valuable support I have found during my fostering journey has been the connection with other foster carers that I have met along the way. Being able to share experiences, advice, and encouragement with people who truly understand the challenges and rewards has made such a difference.
I’ve also really appreciated the training and guidance from my supervising social worker – having someone to turn to for reassurance has been invaluable. Most of all, the emotional support from friends and family, who remind me to take care of myself too, has helped me stay strong and positive.”

These connections –  with other carers, professionals, and loved ones –  have given Sian the confidence and encouragement to continue making a difference.

Sian’s Advice for New Foster Carers

For anyone thinking about fostering, Sian’s message is full of honesty and encouragement.

“My advice to someone considering fostering would be to go into it with an open heart and realistic expectations. Fostering is incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with challenges. Patience, understanding, and flexibility are essential. Take advantage of all the training and support available. Do not be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Building a strong network with other foster carers and your support workers makes such a difference. Most importantly, remember that what children need most is safe, consistent, and loving environments – even small acts of care can have a significant impact on their lives. When you don’t think they’d mean much to you, they mean a lot to them.”

Her advice is a reminder that fostering is about care, patience, and love – and that the little moments often mean the most.

A New View of Family

Fostering has changed the way Sian sees family and relationships forever.

“Fostering has completely changed the way I see family and relationships. It’s shown me that family isn’t just about blood; it is about love, trust, and commitment. I have learned that relationships can be built in so many ways, and that even small moments of care can create deep bonds. Fostering has also helped me appreciate the resilience of children and the importance of patience and understanding in building trust. It has made me more open-minded, compassionate, and grateful for the connections we share – however they come together.”

Through fostering, Sian and her family have discovered that love and family come in many forms – and that offering a safe, caring home can truly change lives, including their own.
